02/07/2003 DEP Fines Easton Company for Hazardous Waste Violations

Advanced Cast Products/Belcher Corporation of Easton will pay a $4,000 civil administrative penalty for violating state hazardous waste and air pollution control regulations. The penalty is part of a negotiated settlement with the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP).

Advanced Cast Products/Belcher Corporation is a malleable iron foundry, located at 558 Foundry Street.

An inspection of the Easton facility revealed hazardous waste violations, including improper labeling and storage of hazardous material. Review of the records for the past three years indicated that the company had been exceeding the accumulation limits of waste oil allowed under its registration as a Small Quantity Generator (SQG) of waste oil. The company has since submitted a change of status to a Large Quantity Generator (LQG) of waste oil.

Advanced Cast Products/Belcher Corporation has also been cited for dust and smoke problems at the site, and may need to install air pollution control equipment.

"It is important that a company meet all hazardous waste requirements," said Paul Taurasi, director of DEP's Southeast Regional Office. "DEP will continue to utilize its routine inspection program to insure that companies protect the safety of their own environment, as well as that of the surrounding community."
